Fields of Biotechnology

Biotechnology is the interdisciplinary field of technology and biology. It uses living organisms or their processes to create novel solutions in many other fields. Organisms are manipulated via DNA technology, protein engineering, or physically. When we think about biotechnology, we usually associate it with the "red" biotech, which focuses on pharmaceuticals and medicine. However, there are many different fields of biotech that affect different industries. For example, an example of blue biotech would be lab grown meat, culturing animal cells for human consumption. Biotech often involves the usage of genetic engineering like recombinant DNA technology to produce novel proteins. For example, human insulin genes are inserted in E. Coli bacteria recombinantly in a plasmid.
