Search scientific literature and resolve DOIs
This tool queries the live Crossref and OpenAlex scholarly metadata APIs directly from your browser. It is useful for resolving a DOI, finding papers on a topic, checking who published a work, and locating legitimate open-access copies — publisher-hosted or repository-hosted, as classified by OpenAlex. It does not create, summarize or predict results, and it never bypasses paywalls.
- Metadata, not opinions. Every record shown is retrieved from Crossref or OpenAlex at search time. Nothing is pre-seeded, cached between users, or generated by Orr Biologicals.
- Open-access, honestly labeled. When OpenAlex classifies a work as open access, the available version is linked with its host (publisher, repository, or archive) and version type. Records with no classified free copy are shown with availability metadata and a DOI link so you can access them through your institutional access.
- Deduplicated results. When the same work appears twice across providers or pages, the duplicate DOI is removed.
- Respect for rate limits. Searches are debounced, cached locally for 30 minutes and sent through the polite-pool contact identified in Crossref/OpenAlex documentation; the tool aborts stuck requests after 15 seconds.
Live engine
No indexed results
The selected sources returned no matching scholarly records. Check spelling, widen the year range, or try fewer keywords.
Engine paused
The search failed safely. Nothing was displayed.
Data provenance. All records are retrieved at request time from:
api.crossref.org (Crossref REST API, CC-BY metadata, courtesy mailto parameter) and
api.openalex.org (OpenAlex — open scholarly index, CC0). Availability labels come from OpenAlex's own open-access classification. Orr Biologicals displays this metadata as-is; it does not vouch for, summarize or translate any abstract or result. No private keys are used; no queries are sent to a third-party analytics service.
Records shown are research metadata, not conclusions or validated results. Paywalled works are identified honestly. A “no open-access copy classified” badge means only that no free version was found — the work may still be free elsewhere.
Plain-language scope
What this engine is — and is not
DOI resolver
Paste a DOI (with or without a doi.org link) and the engine resolves it against both Crossref, which holds the authoritative title, author list, venue and publication year, and OpenAlex, which supplies the citation count and open-access classification if available.
Open-access locator
Search OpenAlex and filter by open access to find publisher-hosted — not scraped or grey-hosted — copies, or green copies on reputable repositories. The linked version label (“submittedVersion”, “acceptedVersion”, “publishedVersion”) is shown from OpenAlex metadata where present.
Research question scoping
Filters include publication years, author, publication source and open-access status. The engine is deliberately narrow: it retrieves what the providers actually hold. It does not invent records or abstracts.
Not a paywall bypass, not a summarizer
If a paper has no classified free version, the tool says so plainly and shows legitimate access routes — the DOI's publisher record and your institutional access. Abstracts are reproduced from provider metadata as-is, not generated.
